Work for Navi Mumbai Metro to start from May 2011

The work for the proposed Metro Railway Project for Navi Mumbai city will start from May 2011. The agency responsible for the project, City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (CIDCO) will invite tenders in this regard soon.

The agency has invited tender on February 28, but later on cancelled it without giving any reason.

CIDCO roped in Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for feasibility study and prepare a master plan. After studying, DMRC submitted its report and indentified six rail corridors for setting up metro service.

Speaking to ITP, Mohan Navane, Public Relation Officer said, “We will be starting out first line from May 2011, which will be from Belapur-Taloja-Kalamboli-Khandeshwar Railway Project-New Airport. This line will be about 22 km and will cost Rs 984 crore.”

The project will be developed in three phases. The first phase will be about 10.15 km from Belapur Railway station, Sector 7, Belapur Science Park, Utsav Chowk, Sector 14, Central Park, Ketipada, Sector 34, Panchnand and Pendhar with 9 stations.

The second phase will cover the distance of 8.15 km from Khandeshwar to Taloja MIDC, which will be having stations 7 stations at Sector 10, Kamothe, Sector 2E Kalamboli, Sector 7E Kalamboli, Sector 10E Kalamboli, Kasadi and two railways stations at MICD area.

The third phase will be joining two corridors between Phendar-MIDC covering a distance of 2.2 km.

Three of the six rail corridors that DMRC proposed, CIDCO will be responsible for only three as the other three corridors comes under the jurisdiction of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), an official said on the condition of anonymity.

CIDCO has approached the Maharashtra government to make it the nodal agency for developing Metro project in Navi Mumbai as MRT Adminstration implementing agency under the Tramway Act, 1886, which is still under consideration by the state government.

The other five line DMRC proposed was Rajanpada-Kharkopar-Seawoods covering 14 km; Dighe-Airoli-Rabale-Turbhe-Belapur covering 20 km; Vashi-Nerul-Panvel of 25 km long; Nerul-Ranjanpada-Uran covering 28 km; and Vashi-Ghansoli-Mhape corridor will be 9 km long.

Of the first two mentioned, CIDCO is developing and the other three NMMC will be, but if the state government make us the nodal agency, then we will take other three corridors as well, CIDCO official said.
